Can I claim a rebate on a new hot water heat pump?

If you’re considering upgrading to a hot water heat pump system, you might be wondering if you’re eligible for a rebate. The good news is that in many cases, you can claim a rebate on a new hot water heat pump, potentially saving you money while also reducing your environmental footprint.

What do hot water heat pumps do?

Hot water heat pumps are an energy-efficient alternative to traditional water heaters, using electricity to transfer heat from the air to the water rather than generating heat directly. This can result in significant energy savings and lower utility bills, making them an attractive option for homeowners looking to reduce their energy consumption and environmental impact.

Rebates available to you

In Australia, various government rebates and incentives are available to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient appliances, including hot water heat pumps. These rebates are often part of broader energy efficiency programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable living practices.

There are three rebates available –

Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates

Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs) allow you to save up to $3000 on hot water heat pumps. VEECs reduce greenhouse gases, with each certificate equating to one tonne of CO2-e saved.

Small-scale Technology Certificates

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are awarded based on the renewable energy your new system generates or displaces when you consider your location and the energy offset over time into account. With an STC rebate, you can save up to $1000 when you install a new hot water heat pump.

Solar Victoria Rebates

Solar Victoria Rebates aims to combat climate change and foster a greener and more sustainable living environment by investing in solar energy usage. You can apply for a $1000 rebate when upgrading to a solar hot water heat pump.

The specific rebates available to you will depend on factors such as your location, the type of hot water heat pump you choose, and whether you meet certain eligibility criteria. For example, some rebates may be available only to homeowners who are replacing an existing electric water heater with a heat pump, while others may be open to new installations as well.

How does it work?

To claim a rebate on a new hot water heat pump, you’ll need to follow a few key steps. First, ensure that the heat pump you’re installing meets the eligibility criteria for the rebate program you’re applying for.

Next, you’ll need to purchase the heat pump from a registered supplier and have it installed by a licensed plumber or electrician. Keep detailed records of your purchase and installation, including receipts, invoices, and product information, as you’ll need these documents to support your rebate claim.

Once your heat pump is installed, you can submit your rebate claim through the relevant rebate program’s online portal or by completing a paper application form. Be sure to include all required documentation and information, and double-check that your claim meets the program’s eligibility criteria to avoid any delays or complications.

Eligibility checklist

To receive the rebate benefits, you’ll need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must have a quote from a Solar Victoria authorised solar retailer.
  • Only owner-occupiers of an existing property can apply.
  • The combined household taxable income for the installation property must be below $210,000.
